I think I know enough Korean grammar to get by. Although, there is still a tremendous amount that I don't know or understand. My biggest need is to increase my vocabulary. I just know too few words to communicate with those who speak Korean. So, I'm doing some studying outside of my regular classroom work. I like this illustrated Korean dictionary that I bought at the bookstore. For the next couple of days I'm studying colors, names of the months, and days of the week. When I am confident with those words, I'll start on another small set of words. I think I can learn most of the words in this book. I highly recommend this book. Most of the people in my Korean language class have bought this book after seeing mine.

I have been struggling to lose weight since Christmas. Instead of losing weight, I gained 20 pounds. I'm not sure how that happened. I guess cookies and ice cream aren't diet food after all. So, I've committed myself to losing weight. I know I'll be glad I did when I am hiking up one of South Korea's mountains.

I decided to tie a red string on my wrist and leave it there until I lose 30 pounds. Hopefully, this will come off before too long. I've been wearing it for almost one week and nobody has asked me why I'm wearing a red string on my wrist. I find that sort of humorous. The reason that I choose red is stairs. A lot of South Korea's mountains have stairs and wooden walkways. One of the places that I want to go has red stairs just below the summit. Some of the stairs are very steep, almost like a ladder. There are 808 red stairs that have to be climbed to reach the top. I do not want to have to turn back at stair 537 because I'm too fat. The view at the top is spectacular.

The string is helping me keep focused on eating right and exercising. Every time I want a snack I look at the string. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. I did work out at the gym this past week. I went 4 times and spent 45 minutes on cardio. If I can continue this until this october, I'll be in good shape when I get to South Korea.

Today I found some time to work in the garden. I had to pull up the weeds and strip away the top 4 inches of soil in one of my planters. Normally, last year's Gerbera Daisy's would have made it through the winter. They would be blooming like crazy. However, last year we had a severe drought. We were over 30 inches behind in on our normal rainfall. Basically everything in my yard died but a few weeds. It even became against the law to water your yard. So, I get to start all over again.

I got really lucky when I went to the local garden center. They just got a big shipment of Gerbera's in and they were in great shape. I hand picked a dozen for my garden. I'm happy with the colors that I got. The Gerbera Diasy's are one of my favorite macro photography subjects. There will be many photos to come...........soon!

This week, we were supposed to learn a whole sheet of vocabulary. I think some of these words will be on our final exam in a couple of weeks. I know most of the nouns, but very few of the verbs. I take this sheet of words with me during the day. I look at them regularly from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. Every time I take a little break, I go over the words. I worked on a different 1/4 page every day this week. This seems to help me remember the words. When I'm done with this set of vocabulary, I plan on making another sheet for next week.

The last 2 weeks, I have been working on the last couple chapters of my Intermediate Korean book. It is virtually impossible for me to finish the work. My knowledge is just too limited to be able to understand what the questions are, much less find the answers. Fortunately, I am in Chapter 4 of this same book at my other Korean language school. I hope that I will be able to complete those last 2 chapters in that class.

I've definitely learned a lot in my Korean classes this year, but I still feel that I don't know enough to be able to communicate well when I am in South Korean this October. I am hoping that I can greatly increase what I know by then.

When this class ends in 2 weeks, there will be another 12 week session after that. My other school still has 9 weeks left. This Summer, the teacher wants to go to 3 days a week. I hope that happens. I am also seeing my tutor for 2 hours every week. In a couple of hours, I have to start on the assignments that she gave me this week. I have some vocabulary and some writing assignments to complete. Without a doubt, I learn more from her than I do in both of the other classes put together. If you can find one, a tutor is the best way to learn Korean.

We have several half price bookstores in Houston, Texas. Most of the books in the stores are used, but some of the books are old editions or discontinued books. I found this brand new Korean dictionary at one today. It cost just $8 US. That's not too bad for a good Korean language dictionary. The English to Korean part of the book is excellent. I think I've found every word that I've looked up. However, the Korean to English part of the book isn't very good. It has plenty of words but it spells them with English letters instead of Korean letters. They seem to employ some strange spelling technique that I can't figure out. Still, the book is well worth the price.

I have about reached the limit of my ability to grasp the Korean language during the current semester. I am still learning, but I do not know enough words to be able to keep up. The important thing is that I have to keep trying and I'll do better next semester.

I spend a lot of time every week looking up vocabulary words and trying to find grammars rules. Even though I spend a lot of time researching my answers, they are often wrong. I probably should just concentrate more on vocabulary and just try to make it through the semester.

At least I'm still doing very good during snack time. I'm almost positive that I will get a perfect score on that.

I just got through checking airfares for the day. All of the airlines and booking agents have prices that are fairly close together. The booking agents tend to have a lot of flights with long layovers. I guess that the airlines are letting them sell the hard to book flights. Some of these flights are more than twice as long as the 17 to 18 hour trip that I booked last year. There are some that take over 40 hours to get to South Korea!
For the small amount of money that you save on booking with the online company, I think they should be avoided. If there is a problem, I think the airlines help the people who book with them directly first. The people who book with Travelocity and Orbitz get helped last. I may be wrong on this, I'm not sure. Also, you can't pick your seats on all of the flights. This is a big factor on a long, long flight.

There are 4 major airlines that fly from Houston to South Korea. United, Delta, American, and US Airways. Last year I booked with United and I'd like to book with them again. I like the flight that leaves around 8 on Saturday morning and arrives around 3 in Seoul on Sunday afternoon. Currently United and US Airways are about the same price. For some reason, Delta is $300 more expensive than the price listed on Orbitz. American doesn't offer a flight that leaves when I want. The main reason that I want to book with the airline directly is their customer service. I think it is better if you book directly with them. The main reason that I want to book with United is that that have a flight class called Economy Plus. This section is located towards the front of the plane. They get off the plane right after first and business class. Last year, I was at the back of the plane and it took me an extra 90 minutes to get through customs and immigration. The best part of Economy Plus is that there is 5 to 6 inches extra leg room. Now for the bad part. It costs about $100 extra each way. If I can get a good price on my airfare, I plan to purchase the Economy Plus this year.

In December, I did a search for airfares to South Korea. The price, for the time that I want to leave, was around $1065. The price of the airfare has been slowly going up since then. I wish that I had booked later.

I am counting on the airfares going on sale late in the year. This may turn out to be a big mistake. I hope not. When I look at the seating chart for my chosen flights, I notice that the airplane is less than 1% booked. With so many seats available, there has to be a sale. The key will be to continue checking the price everyday and be ready to book when the price drops.

As I plan my next trip to South Korea, I am closing in on the actual dates. I have no interest in being in South Korea during the hot Summer or very cold Winter. I would love to go during the Spring, when the cherry blossoms are blooming. However, it is difficult for me to get away from work since this is our busiest time of the year. That leaves me with Fall, which is always good choice.

Last year I was in South Korea during the last week of September and the first two weeks of October. The weather was beautiful. You had to wear a jacket during the early morning, but needed to take it off and carry it the rest of the day. It only rained twice during that time, which was nice. It wish the leaves had turned color a little more.

I finally decided to go for a full 3 weeks again. I was going to spend 2 weeks in Arizona and 2 weeks in South Korea. However, since I am spending 15 to 20 hours a week studying Korean, I'm going to go ahead and cancel my Arizona trip. I also want to leave a little later. The earliest that I want to leave for Korean is October 6. The latest would be November 3. I'm fairly sure that I will be leaving closer to October 6. Whenever I choose to leave will be a good time to be in South Korea. I just wish it wasn't 7 months away.

Finding a Korean language tutor has helped me more than I could ever have imagined. I wish that I would have found her earlier. It really helps that she taught Korean out of the same text book that my 2 current Korean language schools are using. She has the teacher's textbook edition, which is great!

I've noticed that my tutor is not having to spend half of our time together correcting my pronunciations. Still, some words are very difficult for me. Also, my reading speed and accuracy is improving. I can't keep up with the other students in my classes yet, but I am getting close.

We have found that I receive the most benefits of her teaching by just going over the homework from my 2 schools. I usually get about 12 pages of homework from each school. The repetition of the study material is helping me remember much better than when I used to just go to class 1 day a week for 2 hours.

I can't wait until I am back in South Korea. I really want to see how much I've improved. I have confidence that I will be able to communicate much better this year. Of course, last year was such a disaster that there is no way it could be worse.

I wish that everyone who is trying to learn Korean could find someone like my tutor. It is difficult to almost impossible to find a Korean tutor, even in areas with a sizeable Korean population. All that I can say is that it is worth the effort if you are able to find someone. Your Korean language skills will improve  much faster than studying on your own.

Korean Folk Tales: The White Tiger 한국 민속 이야기: 화이트 타이거

A long time ago, there lived a young boy in the mountains of Korea. His father was missing since he was a baby. The young boy knew the reason well. A huge white tiger lived in the mountains near his village. The tiger came to eat the horses, cattle, and sometimes the people who lived in the village.

Many years ago, the boy's father, who was the best hunter and gunman in the village, ventured into the mountains in search of the tiger to save the village. He never returned. While the boy was still very small, he knew in his heart that one day he would shoot down the tiger that had taken his father away. As soon as he was allowed, he trained every day with a gun to become as good as his father had been.

When he was 15 years old, the boy went to his mother and said "I am ready to head into the mountains to find the white tiger and defeat him. Please let me go." The mother did not want to lose her son also. With tears in her eyes, she said "Even a famous marksman like your father was lost to the terrible white tiger. Please, son, quit dreaming about such nonsense and stay safe here at home." "Don't worry Mother" the young boy cried, "I shall find the tiger, I know it."

Then, the mother said "Actually son, your father was able to shoot the eye out of a needle from 1 mile away. Can you do that?"

The son had his mother place a needle in a tree trunk. He walked back 1 mile and took a shot, but missed. Once again, he gave up the idea of going into the mountains in search of the white tiger. Instead he practiced for 3 more years. After the end of the 3 years, when he was 21, he tried the trick again. This time, his bullet hit the mark and the eye of the needle fell to the ground.

The mother had made up the lies about the amazing feats of the boy's father in order to protect him. The mother thought that if she made up impossible tasks for the boy to do, he might give up the idea of hunting the terrible white tiger. Now, the mother was impressed by her son's great skill and his determination. So, she gave her permission for the boy to avenge his father's death.

The son was thrilled and set out immediately, in search of the white tiger. Soon after he started his journey, he ran into an old woman, who was an inn keeper. The old woman asked the young man how he had come to her inn. He told her that his father had been a victim of the white tiger and that he had practiced many years to avenge his father's death. The old inn keeper then said, "Yes, I knew your father. He was the greatest hunter in the land. He stopped at this very inn on his way into the mountains in search of the white tiger. "Can you see that tall tree there? Your father used to turn his back to that tree and then shoot the highest leaf, on the highest branch from over his shoulder. If you can't do that, how can you expect to defeat the white tiger?"

The young man attempted the shot, but missed. He knew that he was still not ready. He asked the inn keeper if he could stay with her for awhile. From that day forward, the boy practiced that shot. After 3 more years, the boy was able to shoot the highest leaf, on the highest branch, from the tree over his shoulder.

Then, the inn keeper told the young man "Just because you can do that does not mean that you can out shoot your father. Your father used to set an ant on a cliff and then from a distance of 3 miles, he would shoot the ant off the side of the cliff without even scratching the surface of the cliff. No matter how fine of a shot you are, you can't do that."

The young man tried to do what the inn keeper had said what his father had done. Again, he failed at first, but practiced for 3 more years. Like the young man's mother, the inn keeper had made up the stories about the young man's father. But the hunter's son, not questioning her once, had practiced until he could do the tasks she said his father had done. The old inn keeper was filled with amazement. "With your skill, you must surely be able to avenge your father's death now." The inn keeper prepared the young man a bag of rice balls to take on his trip. He thanked her and started out along a path leading into the mountains where the white tiger lived.

The young man walked deeper and deeper into the mountains. He wandered the mountains for days and days. After all, there were over 12,000 mountains that stretched over a vast area. He did not have any idea where the tiger lived. So, he continued to roam the huge area. One day, he was seated upon a rock eating a rice ball. A very old woman stumbled up to him and said, "Excuse me, sir. Could you spare an extra rice ball for me?" The hunter's son handed her several rice balls which she quickly ate. Then the woman said "We don't see many strangers in these mountains. What brings you here?"

When the hunter's son explained, the very old woman shook her head vigorously from side to side. "No, good fellow", she said. "Forget about shooting the white tiger. He is too fast. As soon as the tiger prepares to pounce on his prey, the next second the prey is gone. From one day to the next, we never know if we will survive to see tomorrow. You are a young man. You should leave these mountains at once and go back home while you are still alive!"

Then. the young man told the very old woman that he would not leave. He told her how long and hard he had practiced and that now, he had the skill to kill the tiger. 'Well" sighed the old woman. "If you are so sure, then you should know that there is only one way to shoot the white tiger. You must shoot him when all that you see is a white dot on the horizon. If you wait a single moment, it will be too late. If you miss your first shot, believe me, all will be lost for you."

The old woman left. The young hunter took to scanning the horizon until he was entirely familiar with every curve and shadow on each mountain, far and wide.Thus, he waited for hours, his gun at the ready. While the sun was still setting, a single white dot appeared where there wasn't one a moment before. The young man was certain of that. Instantly, he fired at the white dot. His heart racing, he ran toward the mountain where he had aimed his shot.

And there, he came upon the great white tiger, nearly as big as a mountain itself. It had collasped with its mouth open, ready to swallow its next prey, him! He was astonished by the tiger's size and thrilled that he was able to defeat such a legendary beast.The son stepped into the mouth of the beast. Inside the tiger's mouth, he followed a black tunnel until he came to a vast room as large as a fairground. This was the great white tiger's stomach.

There, the young man came upon an unconscious girl. The young hunter took the girl in his arms and held her until she awakened. The girl looked into his face and thanked him with all of her heart. She then revealed that she was the daughter of the king's highest advisor, who was famous in the capital city. The young girl told him that she was stolen away just the night before, while she was washing her hair outside her home.

Suddenly, they heard what sounded like a human voice. Puzzled, they moved toward the noise coming out of the dark. The voice belonged to an old man crouched in the corner. It was none other than the boy's father! He had survived all of these years inside the tiger's stomach on the prey that the tiger had swallowed. The father and son rejoiced in having found one another at last. Then, together with the girl, the three of them escaped through the tiger's mouth and found that they were in the middle of a large field. The young man skinned a portion of the tiger, for he wanted to take home, as a remembrace, the beautiful white tiger skin.

Taking the girl by one hand and his father by another, he proudly returned home, where his mother was waiting for him. Words cannot describe her joy to see not only her son come back safely home, but her long lost husband too!

Then, the young hunter took the maiden to her home in the capital city. Her father cried tears of joy to see his daughter returning safe and sound. In gratitude, her father welcomed the young hunter into his family to become his daughter's husband and heir to his name and fortune.

The young man's mother and father proudly attended their son's wedding day. The young man and bride lived happily ever after in the grand mansion of the king's highest advisor.

This vase was fired in a train kiln at Northern Arizona University. The university holds a 2 week wood firing workshop every summer. I have attended 4 out of the last 5 years. I will back again this year in July. I look forward to firing all of the big wood kilns every year.

This vase was fired the first year that I went to the workshop. The vase was placed close to the fire box and received a lot of wood ash. We actually fired this kiln too hot and too long. The vase was stuck to the wall and to the floor of the kiln. It has a couple of big scars from being pried loose. I actually prefer wood fired pots with stuck wadding, cracks, and other imperfections. However, they must happen naturally. If they are purposely done by human hands, they are worthless, as far as I am concerned.

I Need Some Back Packing Equipment 다시 포장 장비를 필요

I plan to do some hiking in South Korea this October. I have been doing some internet research and it seems like it will be a lot of fun. I can tell that it will be vastly different than the hiking that I did in my younger days in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorada ,New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and Texas. Most of my hiking was done between 6500 and 8500 feet above sea level. We would get in the back country and we would hardly ever see anyone within a few miles of us. Once, a group of us went up to 14,000 feet  in Colorada on top of Taylor Park Pass. That hike lasted about 2 minutes and our group went back to the car and drove down the mountain for quite awhile. It took a long time to get my breathing in control. Since I live along the Texas Gulf Coast t 32 feet above sea level, I always had a more difficult time than the others in our group, who lived in the Rocky Mountain West.

Since it's been a lot of years since my last hike, I have to buy some boots and some clothes. I know from looking at the pictures that I will not be the best dressed hiker on the mountain. The Korean hikers dress very colorful. I don't feel the need to do that. The only thing that I really need is a great pair of boots. I always wore Danner in the past and that's what I'll be wearing in South Korea. Other than that I just need a slightly larger backpack to haul some food and drink up with all of my camera equipment.

So, in addition to researching places to hike, I now have to find a place to pick up some hiking gear. If nothing else, I'll just pick it up in South Korea. I saw a lot of outdoor stores there. Well, that would be an excellent idea if I could actually find something large enough for me to wear.
