Finished Bowl Molds 완료 그릇 금형
I have finished the plaster molds that I am going to use to make some handbuilt bowls. The molds still need to dry a little more. I saw a mold similar this in South Korea. I loved the bowls that were made on this style plaster mold. Basically, a slab of clay is placed on top of the sphere and paddled into shape. A foot is then attached and a few finishing touches are added. I look forward to making some bowls in the near future.

Yellow Grey Vase 노란색 회색 꽃병
I finally finished my plaster work so I can now take some more pottery pictures. I have 2 tables and both of them were full of pottery molds that I was working on.
Not all wood fired bottles are going to be good. Some are going to be cracked, stuck to something, or underfired. Still, if you look close enough, they all have beauty. This vase was underfired but I still think it is a nice looking piece of pottery. In a big wood kiln, the flame and heat flow like a river. Sometimes, there will be little pockets in the kiln that don't get as hot as the rest of the kiln. That's what looks like what happened to this bottle. It definitely has a lot of layers of ash.
This bottle has lovely muted colors that some people like. Still, it is tempting to fire the piece again to see what the flame might bring out in this bottle. We'll see.

A friend gave me a set of the Bose noise cancelling headphones a couple of years ago. I didn't have a use for them until my trip to South Korea. I had my doubts that they would be very effective at cutting the jet engine noise. I was wrong. These headphones are amazing. I will always carry a set of these when I fly.
The battery lasts more than the 16 to 17 hours that I was in the air. They are also comfortable. However, towards the end of the flight, my left ear was starting to get a little sensitive. The only problem with them is that are expensive. I would never buy myself a pair, but I am grateful to my friend. I think they are around $350 US. I can think of a lot of things that I could use more than a set of headphones that I might use once a year.
The headphones plug into the airplane seats so that you can listen to the movies or radio. The headphones also make an excellent addition to your Ipod.

Travel Insurance 여행 보험
I decided to buy travel insurance for my trip to South korea. I've never bought it before. However, since I was going to be in an overseas foreign country I decided it was worth the added cost. I started my search by going to http://www.squaremouth.com/ . They allow you to get a quick online quote from several companies at one time. I ended up choosing http://www.travelsafe.com/ for my policy. I paid around $70 for a policy that had everything that I wanted including trip cancellation for any reason insurance.
A large amount of the travel insurance policy is secondary coverage. In other words, you have to collect from your main insurance first. Then, the travel insurance pays the rest. Your health insurance may or not cover you in another country. I called my company and I was covered. They gave me a couple of phone numbers to call and a list of hospitals that I should go to. You also have some insurance if you book your trip with a credit card. There is even a little insurance that is included in the price of you airline ticket. I hope that I never get sick or hurt overseas. I would probably spend the rest of my life trying to get everything paid.
One last thing. In almost all cases, you will have to pay for any medical expenses while you are there. You usually have to pay before you can leave the hospital. Take an extra credit card with you for an emergency. My insurance will pay almost everything if I can get to one of their covered hospitals. If you have to pay for the medical expenses yourself, you will need to collect from your insurance company when you get back home. I did hear that medical cost are very reasonable in South Korea. Be Safe.

You may want to drive a car when you vacation in South Korea. After seeing the drivers in South Korea, there is no way that I would rent a car there. You are literally putting your life at risk. However, if you must drive, you will need an international driving permit. I brought one with me in case there was an emergency situation where I had to drive. I won't get another permit again.
In the United States you can get a permit at an American Automobile Association (AAA) office. You will need 2 passport photos and $15 US. You simply show you current American driver's license and passport. The clerk will make a copy, put your pictures in the book and stamp it. That's it. It took me about 2 minutes to get the permit.
You will also have to have your current license in your possesion, along with the permit, when you are driving. Once again, I warn you that driving in South korea is not like driving anywhere else. You do it at considerable risk to your life and bank account. Public transportation is cheap and will take you anywhere that you might need to go.

My New Favorite South Korean Travel Book 나의 새로운 좋아하는 대한민국 여행 책
I bought a new book about travel to the greater Seoul area today. It is without a doubt the best book that I have found so far. This book will be taking a trip to South Korea next year. There were a few places that I couldn't find this year. I now have good directions to those places. There is also a little information about the famous pottery area, Icheon. This is important to me.
This book is published by Frommer's. I personally don't care for their books that much. They spend too many pages talking about hotels that I'll never stay in and talking about places I'll never eat at. They have taken out all of the things that I actually read and expanded on that information. I like this book and look forward to reading it in depth in the future.
The book includes a map. The map is worthless. I have no idea why they included this map. It would have been better to leave the map out and reduce the price. By the way, the book is affordable. It is $14 US.

This is actually my second time through this book. That should say something about its usefulness. This book is for those that actually want to learn how to speak sentences instead of just learning a few nouns and verbs. It presents Korean grammar and conjugation in a somewhat humorous way. Some of the Korean grammar that seemed impossible when I first started is starting to make sense. Maybe I'll be able to order a cup of coffee after a few more years of studying.
There is a cd included with the book. However, my cd was faulty. Everything is out of order. I have to search and search to find the pronunciation of the examples in the book. I just quit using the cd. I don't know if all of the cd's have this problem or not.
