I made pottery today for the first time in 27 months. I know how much I missed it now. Even though my throwing skills have diminished, I still know how to have fun playing with mud. I am hoping to get back to some serious throwing in another week or two. I am travelling to Arizona this Summer to fire the big wood pottery kilns at Northern Arizona University. I would like to fill my pickup truck bed full of pots to wood fire. I would also like the pots to look good too.

In addition to the burial tombs in Gyeongju, there are several smaller tombs outside of the city. These tombs can be found on the way to the main museum of Gyeongju. If you are a little limited on time, I would just visit the tombs in town. These tombs are a long walk from the bus station.

Gyeongju has one of  the observatories in the world. I am not exactly sure why or how it was created, but it is an interesting highlight of Gyeongju.

There is a large park that is about a 20 minute walk from the bus station. The park has a couple of small buildings, but it the natural beauty that is it's main attraction. The beautiful pond and trees make the park a nice place to have a quiet rest. When I was there, several school groups were having outdoor classes. One of the classes was an art class where they were drawing both the buildings and the natural scene. Another class was using math to calculate the dimensions of the buildings and other objects at the park.I wish that I had an opportunity to do something like this when I was in school.

Here is a large bronze bell that I saw in Gyeongju. There are large bells like this scattered all around South Korea. They are usually located at large temples but are also found near palaces and forts.

The first thing that I asked about, when I rented a hotel room, was an air conditioner. I cannot sleep in a hot room like most of my Korean friends can. I also need the steady hum of the fan to go to sleep.

I had a problem when I stayed at the Icarus Hotel in Gyeongju. The electrical system in my room kept going off and on without warning. Since I was only staying a day, I didn't bother to change rooms. I think it was due to pushing some button on the television controller that also controlled the lights. Even when I pulled the key out of its holder, the electricity would not go off like it is supposed to. I was glad that they don't ask your name when you check into the love hotels.

All of the South Korean hotel rooms that I have stayed in had a key holder like this. To get the electricity in your room to come on, you had to put the key in the holder. You were not allowed to leave the hotel with your key. You had to give it back to the desk and pick it up when you came back.

When you stay in a South Korean love hotel, there are several free items that you will receive. First, upon check in, they will give you a small bag with a toothbrush and a razor. Sometimes they will have a couple other things in the bag too. In the room there are always plenty of free drinks and usually snacks. I even pick up an extra bottle or two of water when I leave the hotel room for the day. Also, you can watch endless free movies. Some are the type that you would expect in something called a love hotel, but there are plenty of first rate movies to watch.

I stayed at the Icarus Hotel when I was visiting Gyeongju. It is one of a dozen or so hotels near the bus stations. I would say that the hotel was like a medium priced hotel in the United States. This hotel is what many people in South Korea call a "Love Hotel". I think it is actually an upperscale love hotel. I have stayed in numerous love hotels when I visited South Korea. I have never seen anything unusual or experienced any problems. They are a nice place for a tourist to stay. They have good beds and hot showers. Also, the price is affordable. There were at least a dozen places that rented bicycles and mopeds in Gyeongju. If I had stayed one more day, I would have rented a moped. I am not sure about the cost, though I did see several people who were renting some transportation. You can see the moped and bicycle rental shops from the bus station. It is probably a 5 or 10 minute walk to the area.

Gyeongju has a lot of hotels due to its importance as a tourist destination. All of the hotels that I saw were "love motels". A lot of people have a negative view of these types of hotels. I have stayed in them dozens of times. They are simply hotels. I would say the the ones in Gyeongju are a little more upscale than the others that I have stayed in. The prices are a little higher in Gyeongju too. Most of the nice hotel rooms cost around $60 to $80 US. Here are a couple of the hotels that are located just behind the Express Bus Station.

To get to Gyeongju you will most likely ride a bus. There are direct buses from all over Seoul that travel to Gyeongju. It is a popular tourist destination. The Express Bus Station is in the middle of the town. You can walk to the City Bus Terminal in about 2 minutes. The tourist information center is in between them. There are lots of hotels and places to eat that take 5 to 10 minutes to walk to.

Bus Ride From Busan To Gyeongju 경주 부산에서 버스를 타고

After Busan, I decided to travel to the historical town of Gyeongju. It was a short bus ride that was very inexpensive. After Sokcho, Gyeongju is my favorite place to visit outside of Seoul. There are so many amazing things to see. I think you can see everything in Gyeongju in 1 or 2 days. I spent one day and that was plenty for me. Gyeongju sees many tourists every year. I saw a lot of foreigners in Gyeongju. There are lots of hotels and places to eat within a short walk of the bus stop.

There is usually a pastry shop at the larger bus stops. I picked up this sandwich at the Busan Express Bus Station and ate it on my way to Gyeongju.
