Houston's Asia Society Museum Opening 휴스턴의 아시아 사회 박물관 오프닝

We had a major museum open today in Houston. It will feature the art of Asia. The building was designed by a famous Japanese architect. It is the most expensive building, per square foot, that has ever been built in Houston.

I went with my Saturday morning Korean class. We watched many traditional dance groups from Sri Lanka, India, Laos, and a few other others. There were musical performance from Australia and a couple others that I forgot. I was amazed at the Japanese fire fighting acrobat team. That was probably my festival highlight.

Our group spent a lot of time doing some of the activities like kite making, calligraphy, and Japanese silk dyeing. A little over half of our group was young children and some us, like myself, are childlike. So, we all had a great time.

I was glad that our school brought their own food. First, it tastes awesome and second, it was free. One small chocolate chip cookie cost $2.50 US at the festival. I think I'd rather go hungry than pay that much.

Still, this is going to be a great place to go in the future. They are having a big Japanese Festival in one month. I can't wait.

Intermediate Korean Graduation party 중급 한국어 졸업 파티

We had a party for our last Intermediate Korean class. We all got our official certificates and had a nice meal. This was really an awesome class. We all became close. I think a lot of that has to do with daily Facebook postings by everyone. Also, a lot of us are taking Korean language classes at another school.

I was greatly disappointed with our celebration meal. In the past, the language class has always gone to a nice Korean restaurant to eat. This year we got a styrofoam box lunch. The meal wasn't even warm, plus there was nothing to drink. It was terrible. Still, this won't discourage me from signing for class again in the Fall.

My Intermediate Korean Language Final Exam 내 중간 한국어 최종 시험

Yesterday, I got my final exam back from my Korean teacher. I made a 45 on my pretest on the first day of class. I wanted to make at least a 65 on the last test. However, I would be extra, extra happy with an 80. My final grade turned out to be a 94. That is one of the top grades, if not the best grade in the class. I couldn't have done it without a lot of study time and a tutor. While I don't feel like I'm an "A" student, I'll definitely take the grade.

When I just opened this book, several set of kiln plans were inside. I have no idea which kiln they were for. They could have just been an idea that I was wondering about. I have several notebooks full of drawings like these. So many dreams, so little time and space.

We have an area of Houston that is mostly populated by Koreans. I guess one might call it Korea Town, though I've never heard anyone say that before. The area where most of the Chinese live is called China Town by almost everyone. Strange.

Any way, I stopped in a gift store recently. I saw that they had 6 Korean language workbooks in a series. I bought the first workbook to see if I like it. It is a little basic, which is good. I finally found some Korean language material that I am more advanced than!!! I like the way that the material is arranged. I think this is probably a good series. I  want to work through the 6 books. This will supplement my learning since I am only attending 1 Korean language school until the Fall.

We had our final exam in my Intermediate Korean Language Class this past week. I had to study countless hours to have a chance to make a good grade. I made a 40% on my pre test. I needed to make at least a 50% to get a certificate. If I make an 80, I will get a certificate of outstanding achievement. While I don't know why it is important to me, I want that outstanding achievement certificate. I find out Wednesday if I achieved my goal.

The test consisted of many parts. First, we had to get in front of the class and speak 5 sentences about our house or our favorite music. I included the speech that I memorized. We also had to fill in a school application in Korean writing. Then, the rest of the test was vocabulary, congugation, and grammar.

I will be happy  with whatever grade that I get. I went to every class, did every homework assignment, and studied as much as I could. I did my best. If I don't do well, I will let it motivate me to keep trying. It takes a long time to learn a new language. I think I have been studying Korean for 1 year now, off and on.

This past week I made my regular visit to our Korean grocery store, H Mart. For some reason, I always walk really slow down the candy and cookie aisle. I'm just amazed at the number of squid flavored treats, I've tried a couple of the cookies, chocolate flavored only, and they are tasty. This week I spotted something that I had to buy. It was a dragon filled with small jelly candies. I don't like jelly candy but I love the little dragon, which is also a bank.

My plan is to take the jelly candy to class and give it away. My other plan is to put my daily change in my dragon bank. I'm sure before long it will pay for another trip to South Korea. Say, in about another 80 years. Good thing I'm only 50 now!
