I bought this paddle a couple of weeks before Christmas. I got it from an online pottery supply company. I like that the paddle has a different pattern on each side. The paddle is made out of laminated bamboo. I love this paddle, but the handle worries a little bit. I'm not sure how strong it is. Since I don't plan on hitting anything with it hard, it should be fine.

This paddle surprised me. I did not expect this paddle to make this nice pattern. I plan to use this paddle a lot. I do think that the slab needs to be a little thicker with this paddle, since the grooves are much thicker.

This is the first side of this paddle. I can't wait to see how the pottery glaze will react to the paddle's grooves.

I didn't make any bowls with these next 2 paddles. I will finish making these paddles at a later date. I want to wrap small cord around one paddle and rope around the other. I still have not decided if I should use natural or synthetic rope and cord. I'll post the pictures and some test results when I finish. I have seen pots made with paddles like these and I really like them.

This next paddle is also made by the Doo Woo company. They are a South Korean company and in addition to paddles, they make other pottery tools. The tools are of very good quality as most South Korean products are.

This is an Onggi style paddle that South Korean potters use to make the huge pots that hold kimchi. Again, this is another paddle that I've never used until this test. I like this paddle a little more. The grooves are deeper and leave nice marks. One negative about this paddle is its shape. It is slightly curved and narrows towards the tip. The pattern that the paddle makes is like small rectangles. This paddle would be useful on these bowl forms.

I bought this paddle right after I started working with clay. That was about 7 years ago. This is the first time that I ever used it. I've always been a thrower. I have never hand built a piece of pottery. This will soon change.

The company that makes this paddle is Doo Woo. They are a South Korean company and the paddle is available from most American pottery supply companies.

I did not like the pattern that this paddle made. The grooves on the paddle are too shallow. I would like the pattern to be raised a little more. Still, I might be able to find a way to use the paddle that might be better than this one example. As of right now, I don't think I'll use it much.

I found some time to test my various pottery paddle patterns. These were just simple tests to see if the paddles made nice patterns. I definitely found some paddles that I liked. Some of the results were predictable, some were surprising.

I used my slab roller to make the slabs that I used for these tests. It usually serves as a table, but it is nice to run some clay through it. I bought this slab roller from Bailey Pottery. It is 22 inches wide. I like that it is a one pass slab roller. You can pile 4 or more inches of clay at the roller and it will still push it through. The only drawback is that it doesn't make slabs less than 1/4 inch thick. I need a thinner slab for these bowls. In the future, I'll use the slab roller to make a slab and then roll it thinner with a rolling pin.

I also used the round molds that I made out of plaster. These are 6 inches wide, which is perfect for these bowls. The plaster not only forms the bowl shape, but it helps dry the clay by absorbing moisture. The blue turn table is a Shimpo banding wheel. I like it a lot. It makes it much easier to work on the bowls.

Here is the inside of one of the bowls that I made. You can see that it is perfectly smooth. You can also see that it is too thick. It needs to be about half this thickness. That will also speed the drying time.

Well, we all made it through another year. I wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. May all of your dreams, goals, and New Year's resolutions come true.

In America, and maybe elsewhere we have a traditional meal that is supposed to bring a good outcome in the New Year. We eat two main foods. One, black eyed peas is supposed to bring us good health in the New Year. I always eat plenty of peas. Black eyed peas with ham tastes great. I'm 50 and still in good health, so they must be working. We also eat green cabbage which is supposed to bring us wealth in the New Year. I have never liked boiled cabbage, so I ate as little as possible. Every bite was not fun, but it is traditional so I suffered through it. I always knew it was another 365 days before I had to eat it again. This year will be different. I love kimchi, which is made out of cabbage. I will be eating a lot and expect my fortune in 2012 to pick up.

The first photo is a picture of the much disliked cabbage. The next photo is of my lovely kimchi. I can't wait for luch. One thing that I almost forgot, we always eat cornbread with our New Year's meal. That's probably just a thing we do in the Southern United States, I'm not sure. As the first couple of weeks go by, I will be asked many, many times if I ate my peas and cabbage. I will be able to say yes once again.

2012 Andong Mask Dance Festival 2012 안동 탈 춤 축제

I am also thinking of attending the 2012 Andong Mask Dance Festival. I did see some mask dance performances last year. It is said that one can't get into Heaven without attending a mask dance. I'm not too sure on that, but I do find the artistry and cultural significance very appealing. The Andong mask dance festival is supposed to be the best in the country. The only problem is that it is in Andong, which is located in an out of the way area of South Korea. However, that makes it even more interesting to me.

The 2012 festival will be held from September 28 to October 7. I will be in South Korea then. My goal this year (2012) is to attend as many cultural events as I can, while still allowing free time to shop and explore. However, I do realize that as soon as I arrive in South Korea my plans will be changing by the hour.

To get to Andong you need to take a bus from the East Seoul Bus Terminal which is know as Dongbu Station. The terminal is located on Line 3 at the Express Bus Terminal Station. The bus from Seoul to Andong takes about 3 hours. You can also get to Andong by taking the Jungang train line to Andong. I don't have any information about that. I will probably take the bus from Suwon to Andong. That will cut a substantial amount of time off my trip. To get to Andong from where I will be staying, Songtan will take about 4 1/2 hours. I really don't want to spend a combined travel time of 9 hours in one day travelling to a festival.

Once in Andong, there are 2 locations for the mask dance performances. One of the places is a short 10 minute walk from the bus station. The other is in Hahoe Village, about a 40 to 50 minute bus ride from Andong. The bus to take is Bus 46. There are a few places to stay in Andong, but spaces are limited. It might be best to go during the week if possible. I don't know, the sense of adventure in travelling to a remote area of South Korea intrigues me. It might be fun to see a lot of the South Korean country side. Also, seeing a performance that not too many people from America get to experience would be a highlight.
