South Korea has a similar custom. However, they believe that the number 4 is unlucky. This comes from the Chinese symbol for death which is pronounced like the number 4 in Korean. The hotels handle this two different ways. One, the number 4 is eliminated. The other way, the number 4 if replaced with a large F. The hotels would book few if any customers on this floor. The Koreans can be a bit superstitious, but so can people in the United States.
