Once I learned to make some simple pottery forms, I started altering them. I would stretch the clay, push it, whatever I could think of. This is one of the first vases that I was happy with the altering process.

This vase was fired in a train kiln. The vase was placed close to the firebox and picked up a lot of natural wood ash glaze. I think this shape looks good wood fired. I think it would work better if it was buried under the bed of coals for a few days.

One year, I made a lot of large vases. I always called them urns, but that's probably not the right term. I find them fun to make and I like their classic look. This is a shape that has been around since the beginning of pottery. I made the vases in a simple shape. I think if I threw some today, I would add a lid and some handles on the side.

I wood fired several of these vases at Northern Arizona University. The vases are a good form for wood firing. They catch a lot of ash and are basically a large painter's canvas for the flames to paint with ash. This particular vase has some deep purple and red flash. It also has some beautiful gold specs that fell on the finger grooves that are created during throwing. I did glaze the inside of the vase with shino.

My original plan was to use these as planters to hold flowers. However, the base of the pot is very narrow. I am worried that they may fall over and break. I do like the curve that the narrow base and wide body form. However, it may be more for looks than for function.

I had my weekly Korean tutoring session last night. We went over my Korean class homework from last week. She also got me started on the homework that my Korean language teacher will give me tonight. I am actually getting decent with word conjugation, sentence structure and other technical parts of the language. However, I am having such a hard time remembering my vocabulary words. It seems to me that I have this backwards. To communicate as a tourist in South Korea, simple words and phrases are all that is needed.

So, I asked my tutor what would be the best way to maximize my time. She thought it was important to finish the homework from my 2 Korean school's classes. She thought that I needed to go slower and try to remember the words that the homework uses instead of just trying to complete the assignments as fast as possible. She also stressed that I need to watch at least 30 minutes of Korean dramas every day that have English subtitles.I admit that I do not have an ear for Korean words. I find it almost impossible to pick out individually words. To me, it seems like every sentence is one long word. I have to improve on that. It's hard to respond to a simple question if you don't know what the question is.

I have about 7 months before I am in lovely South Korea again. I have plans to walk some scenic some trails and hike some of South Korea's mountains. I have to get in better shape. My legs hurt so bad last year from just walking around Seoul and climbing the stairs that are everywhere. It was 7 to 10 days before I could walk without pain. I'm not going to let that happen this year.

Hiking is South Korea appears to be really popular with everyone. I would prefer not to get passed by every 4 year old and every 80 year old on the trail. Plus, I want to have fun. Pain is not fun. One of the hikes that I want to do has 808 stair steps toward the end of the hike. Some of the stairs are really steep. They almost look like ladders.

I go to a regular gym. They have a lot of cardio machines. So, anything that has an incline will be my friend. Now that I think about it, friend is not the right word.

The song was so beautiful that the old man decided to see the bird that was making this beautiful music. The old man put his axe down and went over the hill, following the sound as he went. Soon, he became upon a strange white bird that was sitting on the limb of an oak tree. The old man had never seen a bird like it. He was very tired now. So he sat down to relax to the song being sung by the strange bird. But, it flew to a tree a ways off and began singing a new song. The old man still wanted to hear more, so he walked up to the new tree. The bird flew away again, just as he was sitting down. The old man kept following the bird and before he realized it, the morning had become evening. The old man suddenly looked around him. "What have I done?" he cried. "Why have I gone so far?" "Where am I?"

Almost as if it had heard what the man said, the bird flew over to where the old man stood. It circled the old man's head a few times before landing at a nearby spring. The old man was very thirsty from walking so deep into the woods. He bent down and took a drink. "This is very refreshing!" he said to himself. "It's as sweet as honey!" Suddenly, he became light headed . "Why do I feel so light headed?" The old man lay down on a flat rock and fell fast asleep.

The day grew dark but the old man did not return home. His wife became very worried. Surely he hasn't run into a wild animal, she tried to assure herself. When it became too late to put off her fears any longer, she went in search of the old man. However, the old man was still sleeping on the rock. He didn't wake up until the middle of the night. "What am I doing here?" he said to himself. He quickly left the forest and headed for his home.

After looking everywhere for her husband, the woman went to the house next door. "My husband is lost in the mountains," she said."I'm afraid something has happened to him" "Can you help me find him?" But the man who lived in the house was known to everyone as a selfish person. "Look here!" he said. "It's the middle of the night. It's no time to go looking for someone. I'm not going anywhere!" The old woman had no choice but to set out on the treacherous path alone.

"It's a wonderful thing that has happened to you. But everyone will find it strange that you are married to such an old wife" The old man just laughed. "Do not worry. As soon as it was light enough, the couple went to the spring. The wife drank a few sips and then fell fast asleep. When she woke up, her young husband was sitting by her side. Today, I got all of my South Korea and Seoul travel books together. I am starting to compile a list of the places that I need to visit this year. I don't trust everything in these books. Plus, I know that a lot of it is out of date. However, the books will give me an idea of the events and places that I want to visit. I can do more research on the internet when I find some places that interest me.

I'm not very interested in places to eat or hotels to stay in. There are plenty of hotels rooms in almost every town in South Korea. My standards aren't too high. So, I'll stay in love motels when they are available. I don't think I could stay at a hostel though. I need some privacy. Good food is available everywhere in South Korea. Every bite of food that I ate in South Korea was delicious. I have no doubt that it will be the same this year.

My plan is to stay out of Seoul during the week. I think I'll try hiking some national parks and visiting some festivals during the first week. I plan on visiting Jeju Island during the second week. I'll probably go to Seoul on the weekends. Of course, this will change often while I plan my trip.

This book is becoming my favorite for learning Korean vocabulary. It is is available at my local book store. So, it must be available in a lot of areas. The book was only $22, which is inexpensive for any foreign language book. The book groups the vocabulary into some good sets. You can pick and choose which words that you want to learn. Personally, I don't think I'll be using the words ostrich or elephant very often, when I am South Korea later this year so I think I'll skip them.

For each of the vocabulary is a cartoon picture. I am a visual learner and the pictures really help me remember the words more easily. The book includes mostly nouns, but there are plenty of verbs and adjectives in the book.
