Second Tall Bottle 두 번째 키 큰 병
I made the bottles out of 3 pieces. It is possible to make them out of a single piece of clay, but using multiple pieces of clay is much easier to make a tall narrow pot. As for the decoration, the grooves and impressions were similar to a Japanese piece that I saw in a book or magazine article. I could have done a better job making them though.

The brown color is where the clay wads were located. The blue/ black/ purple color is due to the interaction of the wood ash and potassium. The yellow color is due to very heavy concentration of potassium.

5 Tall Bottles 5 키가 병
The next few posts will be about 5 tall bottles that I wood fired a few years ago. The bottles are all around 28 to 30 inches tall. They were made out of white stoneware and there was no glaze applied to the surface. We fired them for 5 days and finished the firing with a reduction cool. This involves shutting the kiln up tightly at the end of the firing. After that, a small amount of wood is added to the kiln to keep a small amount of smoke coming from the kiln. I think it took 8 or 10 hours of adding the small pieces of wood before the kiln had cooled enough to freeze the iron in the black iron state. As we usually do, we sprayed the pine wood with potassium carbonate. This really helps with reduction cooled colors and crystal formation. Most of the time, we add about 6 to 8 pounds of potassium to the garden sprayers that we use to spray the wood. However, on this load we added close to 35 pounds. The pots in the kiln were some of the most unusual that I have ever seen coming out of a wood kiln.

The bottles have some great markings. They work best as group. However, they aren't too bad alone.

Black Foot Bottle 검은 발 병
This bottle was also a little underfired. However, it was close to being a really nice bottle. The only thing that really holds it back is the large deposits on one side of the bottle. I think that someone disturbed the ash bed during the end of the firing and this caused large pieces of burning wood to land on the pots. The ash from the wood didn't have time to melt due to the firing ending and the kiln temperature cooling rapidly. At the end of most wood firings, we try to be cautious with the ember bed. Usually, a smoother surface is desired. However, during really long firings, at least 5 days, rough surfaces are desired by a lot of us potters. We have even been known to use a leaf blower to blow piles of wood ashes all over the pots.

When I was the Icheon Biennial Ceramic Festival earlier this year, I wanted to take a picture of all of the booths. I wanted to have a reference of all of the pottery that I saw. My hopes are to include some of those forms in my work. While it would have been proper and polite, I should have asked each potter for permission to take a photo of their booth. Unfortunately, I did not do this. Somehow, I justified taking the photos anyway. The excuse is way too flimsy to write down. I do apologize if this offended anyone there.
I tried to take the photos by holding my camera at waist level and moving quickly between the booths. Sometimes, I actually hid behind people when I was taking the photos. I did not think that anyone caught me taking the photos. I was wrong. These first few shots are potters that do not appear pleased that I was photographing them and their booths. I hope that their appearance was due to sitting in a chair for the last month during the exhibition. If I had to do that, I promise that I wouldn't have a very positive expression on my face.

The next couple of photos show some potters that appear to tolerate my photo taking a little better. I do realize this could be deceiving. It might just be due to their shyness and the smiles were a nervous reaction. I truly hope that it was a positive response.

This bottle has classic reduction cooled colors. The light yellows, greys, and browns are very distinctive. Also, the glaze is matte. Matte wood fired glazes usually occur when the pots cool very slowly. The slow cooling allows the formation of iron crystals and that causes the glaze surface to be dull and have a rough texture. When wood fired pots are cooled quickly, they will be very shiny and have a smooth texture. Also, there won't be any reduction cooled colors. The colors will tend to be various shades of green to white.

I finally decided to replace my small camera. It has taken close to 10,000 photos and the technology is getting a little old. Plus, it is missing one of the metal plates on one side. While it is being replaced, I will still use it as a pottery studio camera. I've already wiped a few pounds of mud off of it over the years.

It also records high definition video. The best part of the camera is that it was on sale! I look forward to taking some photos and videos with it this weekend.

I wish that I would have had this camera with me in South Korea. I took a lot of photos inside museums and art galleries that did not turn out very good. This camera is supposed to fix that problem. I hope so. I plan to focus on museums and festivals on my trip to South Korea next year. I'm 90% sure that I know the dates that I'll be there. I am still waiting to see when the dates for a couple more festivals are.
