Seoraksan- 808 Red Stairs, Part 5

For my last post on Seoraksan National Park, I want to show my favorite photo. I love this photo of the people walking up the long set of red stairs that are winding through the rocks. I hope to see this again one day.

Seoraksan- 808 Red Stairs, Part 4

Here are a few photos of the views from the top of the red stairs. No matter how much effort it takes to climb those stairs, it is worth it.

Seoraksan- 808 Red Stairs, Part 3

Once you get to the red stair section of Ulsan Bawi, the climbing is not too difficult. That is if climbing 808 stairs is easy for you. However, there are a few sections where they were not able to put the stairs. Here are a couple photos to show the difference. This was not an easy area to climb due to being exhausted.

Seoraksan- 808 Red Stairs, Part 2

Some sections of the red stairs of Seoraksan can be quite steep. Some of the sections can be quite long. At least you get to share the experience with others. I met some of the nicest people in all of South Korea on this hike. I received a lot of encouragement along the way. This was greatly appreciated. I also learned how to dress to go hiking. You can see in these photos that you must have the latest hiking outfit from North Face. Personally, I just wore regular street clothes. It's not like I didn't already stand out. I was the only non Korean on the mountain that morning.

Seoraksan- 808 Red Stairs, Part 1

You must climb 808 red stairs to reach the top of Ulsan Bawi in Seoraksan National Park. That is the number that I have read about several times, but I did not personally count them. I was concentrating on breathing. The stairs can be very steep, almost like a ladder. There were times that I would climb 20 to 25 steps and I would have to stop for a minute or two. Slowly, I made it to the top. It can be difficult to pass people whether they are going the same way as you or the opposite one. Still, to me. the red stairs are one of the things that I remember most about South Korea.

Seoraksan- Upper Trail Scenery

The top of Ulsan Bawi is just one big rock. There are beautiful rock formations to look at as you catch your breathe. As you look over the scenery on your way up, their beauty will keep  your mind off of your aching muscles.

Seoraksan- What To Expect On The Trail 2

Here are a few more photos of the trails inside Seoraksan National Park. If you take your time, I think almost everyone, even out of shape Americans, can climb the Ulsan Bawi trail. There will be a few  times that it won't be all that much  fun. However, you will be rewarded in the end.

Seoraksan- What To Expect On The Trail 1

Most of the hiking trails up to Ulsan Bawi look like the following photos. It isn't until you get to the red stairs that the hiking gets difficult. I encourage anyone in the area of Seoraksan National Park to walk the trails and see the true beauty of South Korea.

Seoraksan- Straight Down 설악산-바로 다운

After a 30 minute rest, I started down Ulsan Bawi. I thought it was difficult climbing up. However, it was much more difficult going downhill. My legs were sore and stiff. At times my knees and ankles were shaking. I did fall down a few times, but I almost fell down at least 100 times more. Fortunately, I wasn't hurt. Here is a photo of one of the steep parts of the climb. It was basically like sliding down a ladder with just a metal pole to hold onto.

Seoraksan- Out Of Bounds

Here is a photo of a couple people who were in a restricted area. This place looked more than a little dangerous. Personally, the trails were more than dangerous enough for me.

Seoraksan- People At The Top

Since I started my climb early on a week day, it wasn't too crowded at the top. I can see that it could get very packed on a weekend since the area at the top is small. As in a lot of places, there was a man who had a stand selling pictures, medals, and all kinds of other things. It would have been nice if he wasn't there, in my opinion.

Seoraksan- The End Of The Climb

Here is a photo of the end of the trail up Ulsan Bawi. It really is more about the journey that the end result. Still, if it is a clear day you will be rewarded with some beautiful views. The real rewards are the scenery on the way and especially the people you will meet on the trail.

Seoraksan- East Sea View From Ulsan Bawi

On a clear day, you can view the East Sea from the top of Ulsan Bawi in the Seoraksan National Park. I was fortunate to be climbing on a good day. It seems like the sky is always hazy in South Korea. So, it can be difficult to get good photos of mountains or wide shots of a big city like Seoul.

Seoraksan- Through The Hole In The Mountain

As I remember, this spot on the trail to Ulsan Bawi is where the hike really gets tough. As you climb the rock steps into the crevice, the hike tends to go straight up. You can see the first sections of the red metal steps in the background. There are 808 red metal steps that you will need to climb to reach the summit of Ulsan Bawi. In some sections, the steps more resemble a ladder instead of stairs. There were many times where I would count 20 to 25 steps and I would rest a minute or two. While it took me a very long time, I did reach the top.

Seoraksan- Big Trees

In addition to all of the rock structures there are some amazing wind swept trees. Some of these pine trees are growing out of cracks between rocks in some impossible places. While the tree in this photo is only average, it is still amazing and beautiful.

Seoraksan- Rock Formations 2

I think the big rock formations are what attracted me to hike Ulsan Bawi. They provided me some good views as I bent over to catch my breathe.

Seoraksan- Rock Formations 1

One of the most interesting features of Ulsan Bawi are the rock formations. There are some very big rocks on top of the mountain. There aren't a lot of trees at the top, so the rocks are easy to see.

Seoraksan- One Of Many Mountain Temples

There are many temples of various sizes scattered around Seoraksan National Park. This is one of the temples on the hike up to Ulsan Bawi. The trail includes the steps of the temple. Here are a few photos.
