Fun Korean Vocabulary Website

I have found my favorite Korean language learning website of all time. It is called Quizlet. You can search for  sets of vocabulary words on the home page. If you simply search for Korean, you will come up with more than 5000 sets of words. If you search for something more specific, like Korean animals, Korean food, Korean family, or anything like that, you will find a lot of good sets of words.

You can use the word list to study, it will generate tests for you, and use the words to play games. I personally like the game Scatter. There is also a button by each word that gives the pronunciation with a native Korean speaker. When you have fun learning, you will both study more and retain more information. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Here is the link to the website:  http://quizlet.com/

Seoul Food Delivery By Moped

The moped or small motorbike, is an important part of the Seoul and South Korea economy. Small stores deliver their products and receive items to sell in their stores by moped. Food is delivered to restaurants  to make the meals that the people enjoy and to deliver it to customers. One reason that they are so important is the traffic, both vehicles and people, in the small streets.

One thing that you need to know, the moped drivers do not follow any traffic laws. They drive the wrong way down one way streets. When there is a traffic slow down, they travel on sidewalks. Even when you are walking in a safe place, occasionally look behind you for mopeds. I am sure that thousands of people are injured by these mopeds every year in Seoul. Be careful when you out on the streets.

This is set of Pizza Hut delivery mopeds. Almost every restaurant has a number of these, including McDonalds and other eating places that you are familiar with.

3 Way Electrical Plug Adapter 3

My Hongdae apartment had a 3 way way electrical outlet. This allows you to plug in three electrical cords at one time. This really helps, but if you only have American style plugs, you will need to buy 3 adapters. I recommend the power cord that I blogged about before. Plus, it has a surge protector in case there is a problem with the electrical supply.

This is the inside of the 3 way adapter. It shows you the hole pattern of the Korean electrical plug. The electrical plug is called a Shuko. This type of plug is used by several countries around the world, including some in Europe. The plug consists of 2 round pegs and 2 flat metal plates on the side.

Best Thing That I Brought On My Korean Vacation

I simply love my Korean plug surge protector. It handles electrical current up to 240 volts, which is what South Korea uses. You can plug just about any electrical plug in the world into this surge protector. I don't think that I ever had a hotel room with more than one electrical outlet. This power strip allowed me to charge  my cell phone, small camera battery, large camera battery, Ipod Touch, and Ipad at the same time. It is quite a pain to charge each battery and then switch to another and another. If you are only spending a few hours in your room each day, then it is impossible without sacrificing some sleep.

I bought this strip 2 years ago online. Here is the link to the surge protector that I bought:  http://international-electrical-supplies.com/surgeprotect3.html

Morning Muffin And Coffee In Seoul

I like to get up early, even when I am on vacation. In America, I have an almost unlimited number of places to eat breakfast or find coffee before 6 in the morning where I live. That is not the case in South Korea. Even the coffee shops wait until at least 10 to open. This is a little coffee shop on the edge of Honkik University in Hongdae. I think they are probably open all night to provide caffeine to the students who are up late preparing for class. Also, they provide caffeine to those who need to sober up a bit after a hard night of drinking. I saw a lot of young kids that probably had a little too much fun the night before. It was fairly humorous to watch since I don't drink.

While the little coffee shop only had coffee and muffins, that was all that I needed. I mostly drink iced tea and hardly ever drink coffee. Iced tea is not as readily available in South Korea. So, I switched to frozen coffee. I became really fond of it while I was there. So this particular morning, I had a frozen coffee and a chocolate chip muffin. It was delicious.

Large Bookstores in Seoul

I love to go to the bookstore. Bookstores are becoming a rare sight nowadays in the United States. However, the bookstore is alive and well in Seoul. Seoul has 3 main bookstores and many other smaller ones. There is Kyobo bookstore, YP bookstore, and Bandi and Luni bookstore. These bookstores are huge. They are also very busy. There is one big very big difference between the big Seoul bookstores and the bookstores in the United States, they actually sell books to people. People are standing in lines with arm loads of books. In America, people go to the bookstore, drink coffee, and read. How places like Barnes and Nobles stay in business is beyond my level of comprehension. I see very few people buying books there. I think people mostly go there to look for books to buy online. I am sure they will be a thing of the past before long, unless the stores can change their business models.

The Korean bookstores have extensive foreign language sections, which includes English. They also have a large section of books for learning the Korean language. I thought that I knew of every book for learning Korean. I found that I knew about less than 1 percent of the available books. If you go to the Korean language learning section, you will be able to find a book or more likely many books that will help you learn the language.

Building Construction In Seoul

Seoul, as well as the rest of South Korea is growing rapidly. It is exciting that new buildings and businesses are being created as fast as the concrete and steel can be produced. However, there is the inevitable loss of Seoul's past. As South Korea's economy continues to grow expect even more construction in the future. I am sure that in another 10 years, Seoul will be drastically changed in appearance. Again, this is both a good thing and it is also a little sad.

I stayed in a small hotel room across from this building that was under construction. I spent some time watching the building techniques of the South Korean workers. I work for a company that is involved with the construction of large buildings. I saw only a few differences from American building construction techniques. However, I did see one major difference, safety. There was almost no safety barrier between the public and the construction site. I also noticed this when small buildings were being renovated. People were actually walking under the scaffolding where workers were laying bricks. I was more than shocked at the lack of safety.

Jongno Tower In Seoul

Jongno Tower is easily the most recognized building in Seoul. There is no doubt when you see it. The tower is visible from as far away as Namsan Tower, on a clear day. I spent my last week in a hotel near the tower. When I was ready to go back to the hotel for the day, I simply had to look for the tower and head that way.

The tower is located on the north side of town. It is located between Cheonggyecheon Plaza and Insadong. It is located just south of the biggest palace in Seoul. All of these places are within walking distance of Jongno tower. The palace will be a long walk but it only takes a few minutes to get to Cheonggyecheon Plaza and Insadong. Hotels are pricey in the area due to all of the tourist activity. However, I stayed in a hotel for under $50 US per night. However, you must have fairly low standards if you want to stay there. Personally, all that I need is a good bed, a shower, nearby transportation, and most of all safety. I will blog about that hotel later.

Modern Building Sculpture

Here is another photo of a sculpture in front of one of Seoul's office buildings. It looks like this one is enhanced with colored lights and a water display. Since it was early in the day on a holiday, the sculpture was quiet.

Waterfall Near Cheonggyecheon Plaza

The plaza at the start of the Cheonggyecheon Stream is a great place to meet people or a place to just simply relax. The plaza is the location of many special events like music concerts and art exhibitions. In a busy city like Seoul, it is a nice place to slow down and relax.

If you are visiting Seoul for the first time, I recommend that you visit the Cheonggyecheon Plaza. It is only a short walk to Insadong and to the main palace in Seoul. Perhaps, I should have used another word in place of short, but it is not a long walk between these places. It would be a good place to drink a cup of coffee or eat a small snack. Here are a few photos from the area.

A Section Of The East German Wall In Seoul

I wish that I could remember where I saw this section of the East German wall. I think it is was near Cheonggyecheon Stream or Insadong. It was somewhere in that section of Seoul. At first I didn't know what it was. When I read the plaque that was nearby, I was shocked. I could not believe that it was so open to the public. I don't think you would see this in America. Too many people would feel the need to spray paint their own message on it. You would also have people trying to chisel out pieces of concrete to take home. Maybe I feel this way because I live near a big city where this is common. I know that it is only a small group of people who would do this. However, they keep the rest of us from experiencing something like this. I admire the respect that the Korean people show this important piece of history.

I feel that this section of the East German wall may have a deeper meaning to the Korean people than to me personally. It was part of a physically barrier that divided a country. On one side of the wall, there were free, democratic people. On the other side were people under great government control. Many families were kept apart after the wall's construction. This is very similar to what is currently happening in Korea. The difference was that one day the wall was torn down and the divided Germany became one again. I think all people want to see this happen to the people of Korean. I hope the suffering will be over soon.

Tapgol Park In Seoul

On my last trip to Seoul, I stayed in the Jongno area for a week. Tapgol Park was a short walk from my hotel. I found this park a good place to relax from the fast pace of the city. I was not alone as there were many people who enjoyed sitting in the peaceful park. The park has much significance as a resistance to the rule of the Japanese back in 1919.

Wongaksa Pagoda In Tapgol Park

The is one of South Korea's national treasures. It is truly awe inspiring. I am not exactly sure why the Wongaksa Pagoda is encased in glass. It may be that it is undergoing restoration or it is a protective environment. I did see a couple other historical monuments that were also encased in glass. Personally, I do not know the significance of the pagodas, but I would like to learn.

Flame Sculpture In Seoul

This is another sculpture in front of one of Seoul's tall buildings. I have looked at it several times and have tried to decide what the artist is trying to convey. Every time I look at it, I come up with a different theory. Sometimes, it's just best to look and enjoy.

Cheonggyecheon Stream Walk

As you walk away from Cheonggyecheon Plaza, the stream is a little less refined. However, the are a few  waterfalls and rock formations scattered along its length. The stream has a walkway along the edge of the stream. Also, there is another walkway that follows the stream at street level. People walk the stream while touring, shopping, and going to work. There are many bridges that cross over the stream. If possible, skip a subway stop or two and walk along the stream and enjoy Seoul with the locals.

Large Bird Sculpture In Seoul

Here is a photo of a sculpture of a large chicken or may some other type of bird. The small human figure looking up at the bird makes it special. There are always little temporary installations like this around Seoul. Please don't ride the subway and walk directly to your destination. Walk, walk, walk. You will be amazed at all of the things that you will see.

Crossing An Intersection In Seoul

Crossing the roads in Seoul was the most stressful thing that I did when I was there. I admit that my heart beat very fast and I walked and sometimes even ran across them. I saw many crazy drivers when I was in South Korea. I am positive that no foreigner could drive in South Korea without getting hurt of hurting someone else. There seem to be too many unspoken or unwritten rules for foreigners to follow.

Do not cross an intersection unless the light tells you to. Even then, you are risking your life. Some intersections are so wide that you will really need to partially run to get across in time. Basically, here is my street crossing strategies. First, say a prayer , even if you are not religious. Two, get as close to some school children or old ladies as possible. While I don't think that the Korean drivers would worry too much about running over a foreigner, I am positive they wouldn't want to hit any small children or old ladies. Third, get across the street as fast as possible. If you see people running, you should run too. They most likely know how long the intersection light is. Fourth, if you made it across the street, say another prayer. It might just help you on your next crossing.

While I injected a little humor into this post (maybe), it really is very dangerous to cross the streets. I did not see many close calls with cars almost hitting people. I did see that cars did respect people in the cross walks during red lights. However, be very cautious, I do feel that the danger is there.

Round People Sculpture In Seoul

Since I am a little American sized, overweight. I decided to use the word round instead of fat. I wish that I could get my girlfriend to use that term. I must admit it does keep me dedicated to the gym. Fortunately, she is supportive when I lose a pound or two.

I really like this sculpture. Once again this was in front of some random office building. You could walk around the large buildings and take photos of artwork all day long. That is something that I wouldn't mind doing myself. Last night, my Korean girlfriend told me that it is part of the law that all of the buildings have art like this in front of them.

The Mountains Surrounding Seoul

When I first visited South Korea, I was surprised at all of the mountains that it had. South Korea actually has little land for people to live and for places to grow food. The Korean people are very efficient using the flat land that is available. Even in the flat areas of Seoul, you will still find yourself walking uphill a lot. The mountains come right up to the edge of Seoul. This photo was taken on the north side of Seoul. You can see just how close they are.

The South Korean mountains aren't as tall as the Rocky Mountains in the United States. They do seems to be more vertical though. After climbing a few, I felt that I Mount Everest would have been easier It's possible, but I am not ready to admit it yet, that I am not in as good physically condition as I think.

Families Celebrating Chuseok

I was in Seoul during the Chuseok holiday last year. I saw a lot of families visiting the palaces and other historical places together. It was nice to see everyone having fun. There is a long plaza in front of the main palace in Seoul. It is a fun place to visit.

Tom's Coffee Fruit Drink In Seoul

Tom's Coffee is a very popular coffee chain in Seoul. I think there must be dozens of locations around Seoul. I would judge their coffee as decent but there are better places in Seoul. I did like this fruit smoothee that they sold. Tom's was a good place to rest my sore legs, hook up to the internet, and enjoy a cool drink.

Bear Sculpture In Insadong

This bear sculpture seemed out of place. I am not sure if this was done by a Korean artist or if it was donated by an artist from another country. The drawings on the side of the bear remind me of art from Hawaii or the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The themes of the drawing seem to be of Korean origin, but I am not sure. I like the artwork but it confuses me.

This sculpture form is fairly common in the United States. Some city or organization will construct a number of identical sculptures like this. They could be cows, horses, birds, or even bears like this. The sculptures are then given to artists to create on. Usually, the artworks are auctioned off for charity or are displayed at prominent places of the city.

Finding Food In Seoul

It is not difficult to find food in Seoul. From almost anywhere in the city, you could close your eyes, walk 20 feet and be eating within minutes. Every type of food in the world is available in Seoul including my favorite, Korean food! Here is a photo that quickly sums up the variety of restaurants in Seoul. You have a Texas steak restaurant next to a restaurant that serves blowfish. I can't think of any two foods that could be more different. I am sure that there are many, many more restaurants within a 100 yards or meters. So when you are packing for your trip to Seoul, don't forget to pack your appetite.

One Of Seoul's Side Streets

This is a typical view of one of Seoul's small streets. I would guess that there are several hundred miles of streets like these in Seoul. Shopping, eating, and just about everything that you might need to do can be found down these small streets. These little streets can get very crowded with people. Throw in car traffic and the ever present motor bikes and you have a very active scene.

Believe me, there is no shortage of signs inviting you into the various businesses. It can sometimes be difficult to find a specific building with all the signs, whether in the daylight or at night. This photo is from the early morning and the businesses have set out their garbage for pickup. For the most part, these small streets are very clean. So, get out of the subway, off the main streets, and explore these side streets with the rest of the people in Seoul. You will enjoy yourself and you just might be surprised with what you find.

A View Of Cheonggyecheon Stream

Cheonggyecheon stream runs through the center of Seoul. At one time it was an actual stream. Then, due to Seoul's growth, it was paved over. At some point in the recent past, the stream was restored and made into a beautiful place to walk and a place to meet friends and people watch. I admittedly haven't spent much time time here, but I truly love the job Seoul has done to create such a great place to escape city life, if only for a moment. At the beginning of the stream, there is a large plaza. This is a good place to meet friends and it is also the location of many special events like music concerts and art shows. If you visit Seoul, this should be on your must see list.

Whale Sculpture In Seoul

This is a photo of a magnificent fiberglass and steel sculpture of a whale. I wish that I had a better photo of it.   Most of the sculptures in front of buildings in Houston are horrible. Some so called artist welds a bunch of scrap metal together, paints it with some leftover paint, and cons someone into thinking it is art. I wish that we had sculptures like this in our town. The artist and the owner of this building should be very proud of bringing this piece of art to Seoul. I loved it.

A Few Random High Rise Buildings In Seoul 2

Here are a few more street photos in Seoul. They give a slight insight to the business center of Seoul. I only took a few building photos because I don't find them very interesting myself. I do like the first photo. It is of a really modern building that is shaped like the American letter "R". I also like the last photo with the Namsan Tower visible in the distance.

A Few Random High Rise Buildings In Seoul 1

Here are a few photos of the tall office buildings around Seoul. For the most part, these are just normal high rise buildings that you would find in any large town. With such a large population of citizens in Seoul, there is no shortage of these type of buildings. While Seoul is spread out over a fairly large area, there are limits to how far it can expand. South Korea is a mountainous country and the mountains completely surround the city.
