Inside Of A Bowl

This piece is very unusual. I have never seen a glaze like this, especially one that has been wood fired. The inside of this bowl looks like mother of pearl. It has a beautiful rainbow like shimmer that changes as you move the bowl from side to side.

Look at the inside of this bowl and compare it to the surrounding pots that were fired next to it. It doesn't look like it is possible to produce this glaze in a wood kiln.

The outside is another story. I do not care for this pink color. If only the outside of the bowl looked like the inside, it would be world class. By the way, I have no idea what glaze the potter used.

Heidi is the potter who made and glazed the bowl. I really like her. I fired with her in 2007 and 2009 at Northern Arizona University. I hope we can fire together again one day.

Wood Fired Red Clay Pot

My first wood firing experience was in 2006. I had been working with clay for 6 months. I probably spent 2 hours a week making pots. This small pot is one those first few pots. I used a red clay that was high in iron.

I thought a lot about what type of pots I should make for my first wood firing. I thought that it would be a good idea to make grooves into my pots. The idea was to catch the wood ash and make some nice drippy glaze runs. I now prefer the prefer smooth pots, but I am beginning to be interested in deep textures again.

This pot was fired in a train kiln. We fired the train for 3 days with pine and used a little hardwood to side stoke. The pine wood came from a log home factory and had a high percentage of bark. I think that contributed to the beautiful colors that the kiln produced.

When Functional Pottery Becomes Purely Decorative

Most wood fired pottery that is built for every day use is placed in a protected place in the kiln. These pieces are usually glazed and have a smooth surface. These pots will come in contact with our hands and lips. Occasionally one of these pieces will be loaded in an area of the kiln where they build up a rough, crusty surface. Even with considerable grinding, these pots can't be used to serve food or drink. Here are two pots that fit this description.

To me, these pots are some of the best that I've ever seen. However, the makers of the creamer and the ewer probably weren't expecting them to look like this when the kiln was opened. I hope they came to love them anyway. I know I did.

There is one exception to rule that functional pots should have a smooth surface. Any vessel that holds and pours alcohol looks particularly good with an interesting surface. After a few pours, it looks even better. The Japanese sake bottle are an example of this form.

Nice Wood Fired Plate

A couple years ago, we had a high school student come to the Summer wood fire workshop at Northern Arizona University. His name was Matty and he was a very good potter. He made one of the best pieces in the workshop. His plate was in the side stoke area of the double wide train kiln. It was almost completely buried by the burning wood during the firing. It was a great plate made a great young man.

This is what happens when you are young. You have to stand there and pose for pictures until all of the old people get tired. Thanks Matty for putting up with us so patiently.

Wood Fired Tenmoku Glaze 나무 Tenmoku 유약 해 고

I don't like to glaze my pots that I put into the wood fired kilns. However, I see some beautiful results from the potters who do. Sometimes wood firing changes the glaze. Sometimes it makes it better, sometimes it make it worse. The glaze on this pot was really improved during the wood firing. This pot was glazed with tenmoku, which is a well known iron glaze. It is usually a black to brown glaze. It sometimes turns a little red or orange around an edge.

This brown to black glaze has small golden yellow flakes floating in the glaze. It was beautiful. I would love to have some pots turn out like this.

I Finally Completed My Bowl Molds!

I finally have my finished bowl molds. It seems like one event after another has kept me from finishing them. Now, as soon as I get a free weekend, I'll make some bowls. I'm tired of looking at those empty shelves where my new bowls should be.

I sanded all of the edges smooth and wiped away all of the plaster dust.

I leveled my banding wheel so that my molds would be uniform.

I am using carpenter's glue to join the plaster pieces together. I tried using plaster, but it set up too fast. I couldn't get the plaster pieces aligned fast enough. I was told that the carpenter's glue would hold up to the moisture better than most glues.

I used more than enough glue. These molds don't have to look good, they just have to work.

I then placed one of the half spheres on the base and made sure that it was level.

After the glue had dried, I flipped the mold over. I then applied more glue to the under side.

I then let the glue dry for a couple days.

Finally, I joined the other half sphere to the mold. All that I have to do now is make sure the glue is completely dry. Then, I'll be ready to make some bowls.

I am sure that there are bowl molds at some ceramic supply store, somewhere. I couldn't find any that were shaped like these 6 inch bowl molds. It took me longer to make these molds than I thought it would. Still, it was sort of fun. The molds are unique and will be my first step in hand building some pottery in the Korean style.

Clay Mixing

I buy most of my clay from a store. My favorite clay body throws like a dream and it produces beautiful colors in the wood fire kilns. My clay of choice is Laguna Clay Company's B Mix, cone 10. If I was restricted to 1 clay body, this would be it. There is nothing else commercially available that is even close. B Mix is a white stoneware that is very plastic. The clay throws tall and you can push it wide without failure. Also, it hardly ever slumps. Its only drawback is it is fairly expensive. At my local supplier, it is $25 per 50 pound box of clay. You can get a little discount for larger quantities. I usually buy 500 pounds or a little more at a time.

If I had to use a red clay, I would use Armadillo Clay Company's Balcones. It is a cone 10 red clay that fires to a beautiful color. Armadillo Clay Company is a Texas clay supplier and probably isn't available everywhere.

If you wood fire, you will want to start making your own clay body someday. Certain places in a kiln and certain firing conditions work best with different clay bodies. For example, when you reduce cool a wood kiln, clays with a small amount of iron look best. In kilns that do not have good reduction, red clay bodies look best. Areas near the firebox need open clay bodies with sand and lower iron levels. Smooth, high iron clay bodies look very good in the rear of a wood kiln. Porcelain clays also have places in the kilns where they look best.

This first clay mixer is my favorite. It is the Peter Pugger. It is very simple. You put in a little water and start throwing in your dry clay. You keep adding dry clay until the clay starts getting stiff. Then, you mix the clay for 5 to 10 minutes. Finally, you hit the pug button and out comes clay that can go straight to your wheel. It is free from air and ready to throw. I always pug every batch 2 times to make sure it is mixed well. Also, it is best to bag the clay and let it age for a few months. However, at our Summer workshop, we throw the clay straight from the Peter Pugger. The clay is short and does not like to go very wide. With some effort, you can keep ribbing the sides to help with this.

The second clay mixer is the Soldner Clay Mixer. It is a big revolving concrete drum. You pour in some water and keep adding dry clay until it stiffens up. Then, we usually place it in the Peter Pugger to get the air out of the clay. If you do not have a pugmill, you have to hand wedge the air out. It is best to let the clay from the Solder age a few months, put you can throw the clay straight from the concrete tub. We make all of our wadding for the wood kilns in the Soldner. To load a big wood kiln, we will use up to 3 full wheelbarrow loads of wadding.

The next clay mixer is the Bluebird Clay Mixer. The Bluebird is a stainless steel box with a revolving blade inside the box. You add a little water and start adding dry clay until the clay gets stiff. As the clay starts to dry out, you have to stop the mixer and scrape the clay off the sides every few minutes. You will have to this over and over and over again. It takes a lot of effort to mix clay in a Bluebird Clay Mixer. However, it is worth it. The clay comes out perfectly mixed. Then, you either put it in a pugmill or hand wedge it. Again, it is best to let it age a few months.

This is a method that I have used to mix hundreds of pound of clay. It is simply mixing 2 or more commercial clay bodies together. You can get some suprisingly good results doing this. I like one clay where I mix porcelain with a sandy buff clay body. I also like to mix porcelain with iron clay bodies. The only drawback to this is that it takes a lot of work. Of course, if you had a Peter Pugger, it would be really easy.

I have mixed thousands of pounds of clay in a 5 gallon bucket. Do not think that you have to own a $5000 US clay mixer pugger. All that you need is an electric drill and a 5 gallon bucket. You simply add water to the bucket and add dry clay until it is a very thick clay slip. Then use your drill and mix it as well as you can. Next, you dry the slip out on a thick plaster bat until it is stiff enough to throw on the wheel. You will need to pug the clay or wedge it a lot.

If you have access to a clay mixer, you should try a make a few small batches of clay for yourself. It will give you another area to explore your creativity. If you don't have access to one of the expensive pieces of equipment, you can still make your own clay. There is just something that is very satisfying when someone asks you "Which clay body are you using?" , and you get to say "My own."

Second Day Of Intermediate Korean Class

This class is much harder than I thought it would be. I spent around 15 hours studying Korean this week and I don't feel that I've learned anything. The few things that I have learned will have little use once I am back in South Korea on vacation. I know the Korean words for chemistry and world history. I did not use those words on my trip to South Korea last year. I'm almost positive that I won't need them this year.

At least we celebrated the Lunar New Year by eating a small meal in class. We also watched some Korean music videos while we ate. For some reason, all of the videos were of the singing group, Girl's Generation. I must admit that I didn't complain.

The first week, we learned about the different emotions, like I'm sorry and I love you. We worked on which number system to use with which counting classifier. For those who don't know, Koreans have 2 number systems, the Sino Korean and the Native Korean numbers. You use one set of numbers for certain items, like hours and a different set of numbers for other items, like minutes.

We also worked with the past tense of was/ were and was not/ were not. Next, we learned about like and dislike. The last thing we learned was a connective word that is similar to and.

I was not able to keep up with the class when they were working on the answers to the homework. I never could seem to find out which question they were on. I'm hoping that I just had a bad day and it will get better.

For homework, we got assigned another chapter, even though we didn't finish going over the first chapter. The teacher wants to complete 10 chapters in the 12 week class. I think it would be better to learn 5 chapters well, instead of 10 chapters poorly.

Learning Korean On Your Ipod, Part 5

This Ipod app is more of a game than a Korean language learning app. I didn't like this app at first. However, I started playing it and started enjoying it. The game has a learning mode where you learn 288 vocabulary words. It also has a play mode that consists of 16 sets of the vocabulary words. The game works like a matching game. You match a picture to a vocabulary word. As you get a match, they are removed from the page. You get a score based on accuracy and time. This app won't make you fluent in Korean. However, you will learn some essential words and have fun doing it. The price is $1 US. That's not too bad. This app is definitely good for the money. However, if you seriously need to learn Korean, you might want to find a better app to spend your time and money on.

I had to edit my post. I forgot to mention the name of the app. It is called Korean Words 4 Beginners.

Inside A Bee Hive Kiln

This is a huge bee hive kiln that was used to fire bricks long ago. As I look at the roof in the photo, I wonder how I made it into the kiln. I do not go into structures like caves, or even wood fire kilns, unless I absolutely have to. However, I was absolutely thrilled to be inside this historic kiln.

I would guess that this kiln was at 100 feet across, possibly much more. There were small boxes outside the kiln that the wood was fired. The bee hive kiln is an updraft kiln. They aren't very efficient and requires tons of wood to fire. By looking at the kiln walls, it almost looks like the kiln was salted during the firing. It also looks like the roof may have been replaced at some point.

There was a small alter to honor a lady. I believe she was one of the people who were responsible for turning the former brick making company into one of the most important ceramic training centers in the United States.

The fence hides an area of the bee hive kiln that was too dangerous. I barely remember seeing this. It looks like the walls are falling down. I think if I returned to this kiln, I would be taking pictures from the outside and loaning my camera to someone who went into the kiln.

There is one very, very cool thing about this kiln. First, you need to people to be up against the wall on opposite sides of the room. If one person whispers into the wall, the other person will hear the words clearly. It does not seem possible, but it is. If the people turn around and try the same thing, the words won't be heard at all. If you ever get a chance to be inside one of the great kilns, don't hesitate, do it.

Perfect Pot, Perfect Place

I saw this large Korean style Onggi jar at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. The shape of the pot, the color, everything about this pot is a dream. I am particularly drawn to the marks the potter that made. You can see places where his paddle hit the clay and the locations of the various coils that were used to make it.

The location, in front of a pottery studio is also appropiate. That connection is important. The natural setting of the plants and trees give rise to thoughts of its earthly origin. I love this pot.

Here is another large Onggi pot that is located on the grounds of the Archie Bray. You can see the difference between the two and draw you own conclusions.

Jason Hess Bottles

Jason Hess leads the annual Summer wood fire workshop at Northern Arizona University. Jason is an expert potter and has an excellent understanding of the wood firing process. Jason's specialty is the reduction cooling of wood fired kilns.

He does a great job organizing the potters and keeping everything on schedule. He gives a daily demonstration of pottery techniques on the wheel. He also is ready to help everyone with his knowledge of glazes and clay bodies. I really enjoy firing with Jason and hope to continue to fire with him long into the future.

Here are a few photos of Jason helping with the firing of the kilns.

Jason's signature pot is his bottle form. He likes to place the bottles in groups of 5 or 7. I think the comparisons of differences and similarities between the bottles is the important part of the grouping. I assure you that there is a much better explanation of his work.

His bottles range up to 30 inches tall, with the top on. Most of the bottles are 2 cylinders that have been joined together. The collar on top of the cylinders is thrown off the hump. The top is also thrown off the hump. He makes it look so easy when he throws these. Jason uses clay slip as part of his decoration. Most all of his bottles are fired with flashing slips on them.

The bottles are stacked and fired in the side stoke area of the big wood kilns. A tremendous amount of wood is stoked on top of the pots. Also, to make a more unique surface, he stokes organic materials such as rice hulls and straw on top of the bottles.

All of these bottles have been fired multiple times. There is no set amount of firings that the bottles must go through. They are all individually inspected after each firing and unless they are "right", they are fired again. None of the bottles that were shown in this blog post were "right". They will all be fired again, and possibly again, again, and again.

Pottery Placement In A Wood Kiln

The kiln used in these photos is the anagama at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. The kiln is actually shortened into a half anagama. I heard that they were building a huge anagama, but ran our of bricks. They just stopped in the middle. It's actually a really nice kiln. It is tall enough inside to load standing up. Also, it fires great.

The longer the kiln, the more dramatic the results from one area to another. Also, there can be very different results every time the kiln is fired. I used this kiln as an example, due to it being the easiest to photograph.

The front of the kiln is the fire box area. This area brings to my mind the saying, "high risk, high reward". You can either receive the pot of a lifetime or a pot in a thousand pieces. Pots in this area will never be considered beautiful, unless you love wood firing. The fire box pots receive the most heat and can be buried by over a foot of wood ash during the firing. The pots in this area must be made of a good quality clay and they must be constructed well if they hope to survive. Sculptures tend to look particularly good when they are fired in this area.

Unfortunately, several of the pots have already been removed from this area in this photo. However, you can get a good idea of what to expect here. The pot in the center has been broken. It was not the only one. The pots that survived were beautiful.

Next would be the first set of kiln shelves which we call a stack. This area gets a lot of ash due to being close to the fire box. Also, the stack of pots acts like a fence and the flame slows down to find its way through the pots. When the flame slows down, the ash slows and falls on the front of the pots. the bottom of the stack gets some pots that are similar to the fire box pots with a heavy accumulation of ash. Also, the pots on top of the stack can get a lot of ash and have nice surfaces. The area on the top of this first set of shelves can be one of the prime spots to place your pots. The flame rises quickly from the fire box and carries most of the ash to the roof of the kiln. When the flame hits these pots, the ash is deposited. Unfortunately, I didn't take a very good photo of this area.

The second stack of shelves is just behind a side stoke hole in this kiln. In a long firing, several cords of wood can be added through the openings on each side of the kiln. This keeps the ash level high and creates good surfaces. The bottom of this stack can function similar to the fire box. The pots can be buried under several inches of wood ash. The pots in this area can look great, but this is another area of "high risk, high reward". Pots can broken and they can be buried under the ash too early. This will keep them from reaching temperature.

The middle of the stack can be good here. The ash is starting to fall lower into the kiln. This kiln is a down draft and the flame starts heading to the floor. The top can be a good place for glazed work and the pots can get a lot of orange and red flash.

This is the last stack of shelves. This is a great are for glaze work or to get pots with a lot of flash. The ash accumulation is light in this area. This is probably the best area for functional work, like cups and bowls. This can also be a good area for pots that need to be refired.

This kiln load may not be the best example of what your pots will look like in a wood kiln. There is a lot of glazed work and the color of the pots is deceiving. I personally don't glaze my pottery that I wood fire. I like the natural ash surface best. There are a lot of white pots in this kiln. White is not a natural wood fire color, those pots were glazed. Still, the photos do show how a large kiln is loaded and that different areas in a kiln can give different results. Wood fire pottery results are not predictable, but with a little knowledge you can improve your odds of getting the pots to look like you want.
