Last Post For Awhile

I was up at 4 this morning. After a quick glass of tea, I started working on my company paper work, laundry, and about a thousand other things. It is going to be like this for the next 24 hours. The long flight is actually looking like fun now. I will return a changed man in so many ways. I have no idea what these changes may be, I just know that will exist.

Let your fire burn bright!

Long, Long Trip

Shortly, I leave for my trip to South Korea. I expect the travel from the United States to South Korea to be challenging. It will take me a few hours to get to the airport and get checked for the international flight. Then, I get to travel 4 hours to San Francisco. At least the layover is short, 1 hour. Next, comes the long flight to Seoul. That takes 12 hours. Then, the fun of picking up my bags and going through customs. I also have to change a little money, rent a cell phone, and get transportation to my destination in Korea and who knows what else. The next leg of the trip is by bus. The internet says that the trip takes between 1 1/2  to 4 hours depending on the traffic. Finally, I have to find a hotel somewhere in the town. All of this while speaking a bare minimum of the Korean language. There is one bright spot. I have almost 3 weeks to recover before I get to do it all again in reverse.

Is it worth it ? Without a doubt. I am looking past the transportation issues and seeing the wonderful opportunity that I have before me. I have never done anything like this, and may never have the chance to do it again. I plan to experience everything that South Korea and the Korean people have to offer. I hardly have a list of things to do while I am there. I truly plan to live Life in the moment and go where the wind takes me.

If I did have a list of things to do while I was there. it would include some of the following. First and most important is to spend time with my good friend Chae. She was the inspiration for me taking this trip. I can't wait to see her again. I also hope to study with the Korean potters and learn many techniques. I already know that my pottery will change for the better. I hope to spend at least a couple days at the Icheon Biennial Ceramics Festival. I am so lucky that this wonderful festival is being held the whole time that I am there. It is sort of like having the World Cup, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Olympics, and the Royal wedding at one time, only it is all about ceramics. Maybe I exaggerated a tiny bit, but it is the best ceramic festival in the world that I know of. I also want to see the South Korean National Museum in Seoul. The nearby area of Insadong, in Seoul, is also a place I want to see. That still leaves me a lot of flexibility to openly explore Korea.

I should have enough photos and videos to post for the next few hundred years. I guess that I better start eating better and exercising a little more.

Another Future Refire

I will try to get in the studio and grab a few more bottles to photograph. I have just been so busy getting everything ready for my trip. Plus, I have had major computer problems. I loaded up some software and my lap top crashed. I had to use the restore discs to get it going again. After a couple hundred updates, I think it is working pretty good.

This bottle has a lot of unmelted ash that is really going to produce a nice surface when it is fired again. You can tell that the bottle was placed on some really big wads. It may have been on the floor in a place that didn't get quite hot enough. If it had been fired another 24 hours or so, it would have been a really nice pot.

Orange Bottle

This bottle flashed reasonably well. However, it needed to be fired a little longer. Sometimes, there just isn't enough time. It might also be that the front of the kiln got too hot and the firing was shortened a bit. Due to the varying levels of experience in a workshop settting, the firing schedules sometimes needed to be altered.

The bottle isn't too bad the way it is. However is just isn't quite up to the standards that I like. I will refire it next year during my vist to the kilns at Northern Arizona University. I will probably place in the back of the kiln to increase the flashing and get a little thicker layer of ash.

I am sorry to continue putting less than perfect pots on my blog. I have just been grabbing whatever is the closest to the edge of one of the shelves. I have my best bottles protected by being further back   I will definitely post more photos of the better pots when I get back from South Korea in about a month. At least a novice wood firer will be able to see that not every pot that comes out of a wood kiln looks like some picture in a book.

Baby Feet And Chicken Legs

I have a feeling that the title of this post will be my most unique. As I get ready for my trip to South Korea, I have little time to post. However, I am committed to posting every day, if possible. I fired a kiln with a potter who also made large artistic dolls. She wood fired some of her doll parts. It is definitely odd to open the kiln and see a little doll hand reaching up. While the cast porcelain didn't react in the fire as well as hoped, I am sure that she was able make some very interesting art with the parts.

Making Your Own Woodfired Clay Bodies

Each clay body achieves a different look in a wood kiln. It makes sense to have a selection of clay bodies for various wood firings. Some clays look better close to the firebox and some do better in the back of the kiln. How the kiln is kiln is cooled also affects the clay body. There are many other factors that can go into the selection of a clay body.

My main clay body is a white stoneware. I use Laguna's B mix. It holds up to the heat of the firebox and flashes well in the back of the kiln. I also like a couple of different commercial porcelains and a couple of red clays. I am in constant  search of a new clay body. Most commercially made clay bodies work reasonably well, but don't give me the surfaces that I want. The only way to solve this is to make my own. Making clay can be simple with the right equipment or manually challenging without. I rarely have access to the equipment to make clay. However, this doesn't stop me from making new clay bodies.

I have used the Peter Pugger at Northern Arizona University. You simply put in some water and add some dry clay. Then, you hit the mix button and after a few minutes, hit the pug button. I usally repug it a second time, but I'm not sure it is necessary. It produces wonderful clay with ease. I have taken the clay directly from the pugger to the wheel. The clay is not very plastic, but it still throws well.

I have also used a Blue Bird clay mixer. It is a pure clay mixer without a pugger. You still have a lot of hand wedging after you make your clay. The Blue Bird is made out of stainless steel. The clay sticks to the sides during the mixing process. You have to constantly stop the machine and scrape the sides of the mixer to keep it working correctly. It is physically demanding to mix a lot of clay with this piece of equipment. However, it is worth it to make a really good custom clay body.

I have mixed most of my home made clay bodies with a simple hand drill. It is a lot of work. However, it is affordable and produces great results. . I simply measure out the dry materials and soak them for a couple of days. I pour out the excess water and mix the clay slip with a drill. I let the clay age for a few weeks and then dry it out on plaster bats. I then bag the clay and age it for a few months. It produces clay that is as good as any machine clay. It is just time consuming. It can be performed by everyone, regardless of space or budget. I have made a couple of tons of clay with this method. One small warning about this method, buy a quality drill. Cheap drills will fail after just a few hours. I have used the same DeWalt drill to make all of my previous batches of home made clay. It does make some unusual noises now. However, it still works.

The last method that I have used is to simply combine 2 or more clay bodies together by hand wedging. I like to combine a porcelain with a darker clay. This can increase its flashing capabilities and produce a glassier surface. You can also add is some large feldspar or some sand. I still use this method.

Small Wood Kilns That I Have Built

I want to have my own wood kiln. I want it with all of my heart. Unfortunately, I do not have enough room in my back yard to safely build one. That has not stopped me from trying though. I have several thousand hard bricks. I also live close to a refractory business where I can pick up everything that is needed for a kiln in less than than an hour. While, I do not have a wood kiln yet, I have picked up some knowledge that will help me when I finally get to build one.

This is my first kiln. It is a train kiln that is modeled after the small train kiln at Northern Arizona University. While it looks small, it was way too large to be in my small yard. I chose to tear it down before I finished it. The neighbors behind me moved a trailer house about 40 yards behind the kiln. I didn't think it was safe to fire a kiln that big. I did cast a huge arch and got some experience forming it and moving it into place.

My next kiln was a really small train kiln. I did fire it once. I wasn't able to reach temperature. I tore it down because I thought the design was bad. I have now figured out that I grossly overloaded the kiln. It's a wonder that I was able to fire it at all. I really wish that I had not been in such a hurry to tear it down. I am positive that it would reach top temperatures easily. Still, I learned a lot building and firing this little kiln.

I already have a new concrete pad that is ready for a new small wood kiln. I already have the design planned out. I plan on building it when I get back from South Korea. I do have one problem. We are in a severe drought that may continue for some time. It could be a year or even longer to reach the point where I could fire. Water use has been severely restricted. There is no smoking allowed in parks. Every day, the news is filled with stories on the latest fires. My yard is now dirt colored. That is mostly because there is no grass, only dirt!

While it may be awhile before I can build and fire my own wood kiln successfully, I will be working towards that goal. I will definitely post all progress on my blog.

Archie Bray Installations

Over the past years, the potters that have worked at the Archie Bray have left behind some great ceramic works. There are literally pots lying on the ground. Now, most of the pots that are lying on the ground are flawed. The following installation pieces are some of my favorites. This is a very small selection of what is available to view. I recommend that any potter passing through Montana drop in and look around. You will be happy that you did.

This first piece is my favorite installation piece ever. I would love to own this, though I guess the artist would actually want money. That might be a problem. One of my main goals is to create something like this. I may not use these exact forms, but I do want a series of pieces that are wood fired. I do not know when I will complete this project, but I do know that it will happen.

This is another nice piece that is installed on a random wall in the back of one of the buildings. Someone made a pyramid out of wood fired tea bowls. I would come in really handy if you were expecting a lot of people coming to your house for tea. I guess that you would need to make a huge tea pot though.

This tile piece consists of 1 inch and 2 inch tiles that were woodfired. This is another piece that I would love to recreate. The dark areas seem to be were the artist piled pine needles on top of the tiles when the tiles were loaded in the kiln. I think that this set of tiles was fired on 1 or 2 large kiln shelves at the same time. I am sorry that I did not see how the tiles were connected. I wish that I had.

This last piece is great. Someone created a set of large every day items and wood fired them. There are things like large buttons, water cans, and screws. The old wooden cart really adds to the scene. This piece was well thought out.

Letting The Kilns Cool

After we fire, the kilns have to cool before we can unload the pots. If we take it to the extreme, this is what it would look like. I'm sure that unloading would be a major problem due to all of the bricks being frozen together.

The area where these kilns are is Flagstaff, Arizona. They get a fair amount of snow every year. While the snow itself is not a problem for the kilns, ice is. The water from the melting snow can run into the cracks in the castable and the capping mix. The water refreezes, expands and increases the size of the cracks. This causes the potters at Northern Arizona University to do some repairs every year.

I have heard of a firing or two in the Winter time at the university. I'm sure it was never in conditions like these in the photos. The wood would have to be cut and stacked under cover before the firing. The last photo is part of the wood pile. I love to wood fire and I will attend every firing possible, no matter what the conditions are. However, in these circumstances, even I'll take a pass.

A huge thanks goes out to Stevie Parsons for supplying these photos. She is my favorite wood firing friends. I'll be seeing her again in Flagstaff next year when we burn some wood. By the way, this workshop is open to anyone. The details are on the internet, starting in April. I can supply some more information I receive it.

Shino Bottle

I hardly ever put a glaze on my pots when I wood fire. However, I glazed most of my pots in my first wood firing at the Archie Bray. There were various buckets of shinos and I dipped a few pots in all of them. I will admit that I do like woodfired shinos. I also admit that I hate all wood fired slips. They are the primary reason that I don't put anything on my pots before I put them in the wood kilns.

This bottle was placed on the floor in the middle of the kiln. The bottle got a lot of ash due to being next to a side stoke hole. We side stoked the anagama for at least 2 days of the 3 to 4 day firing. In the photo, Ryan Mitchell looks over the results. Ryan did almost all of the loading of this kiln. He did a really good job. I really thank him for all of his hard work.

The bottle was made out of a cone 10 red clay. It is made by Armadillo Clay and is called Balcones. I have found this clay to react really well in the wood kiln. If I liked red clays, this would be one of the ones that I used. I think the bottle is around 9 inches tall. I really like this little bottle.

Hiki Dashi By James Coquia 제임스 Coquia으로 Hiki의 Dashi

A few years ago I witnessed hiki dashi in a wood kiln. It is the art of pulling a pot out of the wood kiln during the peak of the firing. The pot cools quickly and has an unique look. It seems to have become more popular among American potters the past few years. It has been a common method in certain parts of the world for hundreds of years.

In this photo set, James Coquia demonstrates the art of hiki dashi. James was one of the students at Northern Arizona University. He has studied under some of our greatest potters. He really knows woodfiring. I think of James as more of a ceramic artist than a potter. I hate to get into my view of ceramic artist versus potter, but James could be either one.

Hiki dashi can be performed in most kilns, in particular most wood kilns. There just needs to be direct access to the pots that you want to use. Loading is very critical. The pots need to be placed where they can be lifted out of the kiln without causing damage to any of the other pots or to the kiln. Also, pot choice is important. You need a shape that you can bring out of the kiln without any chance of falling.

James uses small cups when he does hiki dashi. He makes little support that the cups rest on. The cups sit on small seashells. I think clay wadding would tend to stay stuck to the pots. The seashells allow a clean release.

The next step is lifting the pot out of the kiln. We use a long metal pole. Rebar tends to hold up to the heat long enough to pull the cups out. It is also long enough to be safe. Speaking of safety, the area needs to be clear of people and anything that might catch of fire.

It does take a little skill to snag the pot. You don't want to knock any other pots over or drop the hiki dashi pot.

After the cup is out of the kiln, you have several options in how you want to treat it. You could use it like they do in making raku. Either dropping into water or into plant based material would be an option. I have seen some that were simply allowed to air cooled. I didn't like these as much. The ash glaze was a little too transparent due to a lack of color.

James likes to reduce the cups by rolling them around with some wood strips. It definitely gives the ash green some color. Plus it is very entertaining to watch. Some might call it performance art. Some might call it showing off. It's your call.

Here are a few of the cups from 1 firing. I have some other hiki dashi pot photos but I can't locate them. These are good examples of what you can expect. If you woodfire on a regular basis, I think you should give it a try.

Small Woodfired Vase

This is a small woodfired vase. I can't remember which firing it was in. I do know that it was made from some homemade clay. The clay flashed decently. However, I was hoping for more. It did mature early and it created a nice drippy ash surface on the side facing the firebox.

This vase is small, at least for me. It is about 4 to 5 inches tall. The outside of the pot was left unglazed. I did use a celadon on the inside. I didn't take a picture of it, but it looked really nice.

I love to experiment with new clay bodies. I have several thousand pounds of new clays maturing right now. I will be throwing some of them in a couple of months. I have very high hopes for a couple of them. I guess I'll always think that there is a perfect clay waiting to be discovered. However, I know in my heart that it won't happen. Different clay bodies work better in different zones in the kiln.

4 Sea shell Pot 4

This pot was fired in a wood kiln. The firing was for 3 days in a train kiln. Like most of my pots is was made out of a white stoneware. My favorite is Laguna's B Mix. It throws great and flashes well in a wood kiln.

I'm not a big seashell fan, but sometimes there is no other choice for wadding a pot. I do like the 4 contact points on this bottle. They form marks that don't distract from the pot. The flashing has good indications of the movement of the flame. The darker color is from the piece being reduction cooled. I really like the nice ash runs. If the pot had been fired a few more days, it would have been been a great pot. The pot cooled fairly slowly as indicated by some nice crystal growth in the ash glaze. Overall, it is a pretty nice bottle.
